Reading 2 is a complementary reading course of the Inglés Carrera program aimed at upper-intermediate to advanced students and focuses on English for Academic and General Purposes. This is a 16 week course consisting of two 1.5 hour face-to-face classes and approximately two hours of independent work each week. Reading 2 uses a variety of written genres in order to develop and strengthen students’ reading comprehension skills and strategies across disciplines. The course integrates the skills of speaking, writing and listening to allow students to more deeply interact with the texts. All tasks will encourage students to critically, analytically and personally respond to texts while supporting communicative competence and reflective practice. Some of the tasks that students will undertake are discussions, debates, forum participation, written essays and reviews and collecting and sharing visual, audio and text-based sources that support and extend their understanding of the assigned texts. This course is divided into three modules which focus on academic texts, non-fiction and fiction. Along with the weekly readings, discussions and written work, students will engage in extensive reading which encourages reading for pleasure and builds vocabulary. Students will also undertake a longer term project during the course which focuses on intertextuality. Assessments will take the form of tasks that emulate how students must read and engage with texts in their personal, academic and professional lives.
